What I personally really admire about you and your videos is that despite you being a truly accomplished and seasoned heli pilot, you are able to go down to a beginner’s level and relate to their level of pitfalls and challenges, and share the solution to address them. i had learnt to do backward fig 8 myself with sticks together/apart, but it doesn't appear polished. the method does however, do well to get me off my feet for the purpose of implementing the fig 8 shape. my question, however, is why my heli sink quite a abit for a given aileron angle (compared to say, forward). was it due to lack of air speed? or was it the nose position (pointing up in the middle of backwards flight, vs point straight ahead)?

    • @rchelicopter
      @rchelicopter 26 днів тому

      The lift/sink normally depends on the wind. If you lift the edge of the disk closest to the wind and expose the underside of the disk, the wind will lift the heli up. And the opposite when you lean the disk into the wind, the heli will drop. Cyclic changes where the disk is leaned at 90 degrees to the wind don't have much change up or down.

    • @glenncain
      @glenncain 25 днів тому

      @@rchelicopter by "disk cloest to the wind", are you refering to the air attacking the point on the disk that is in the direction of movement?

    • @rchelicopter

      Exactly. I call it exposing the underside or top side to the wind.

    • @glenncain
      @glenncain 25 днів тому

      @@rchelicopter by logic you're right, but ever so often i apply aileron and it starts to dip. or unless i have not leveled out the heli before i apply aileron, which is what is causing it? but thats also abit strange because i would imagine the total angle against the adjusted horizon shouldn't be more after adding aileron....right?

    • @jasonwong93
      @jasonwong93 11 днів тому

    Spent the past few weeks learning backward circles (both orientations of course) and thinking wow, no one talks about how hard this is. Great video as I never practiced hard stopping backwards which now seems integral!

      @@rchelicopter I made it 3 steps. 1st was fly backward in a straight line, come to a stop, turn around, come back. 2nd was to do slaloms--flying in a straight line but curving left and right, stop and turn around. 3rd was trying a circle--which is still difficult because there is always part of the turn where i get too "deep" and fall over. hence, mastering the balance!

They are out there but not at my clubs. Plus, Sydney is a terrible place to be into RC aircraft to be honest. Flying fields are generally very poor standards, small, tree lined, mainly fixed wing members with very few club choices and usually miles away from people's homes. It makes it a difficult hobby to achieve high levels of flying proficiency.

The funny thing is: on the movie set the camera and all the crew around does not make me nervous at all. But when I know that I am filmed while I am flying my helis I am almost always flying so much worst that when I am alone. Although my operator is my loved wife! And my worst flying was on a day of "open doors" on a public airfiled. Many experienced Pilots were watching me fly and my left thumb was shaking like hell.
